Richard Arthur Beckinsale (7 July 1947 – 19 March 1979) was an English actor, he was best known for his roles as Lennie Godber in the popular BBC sitcom Porridge and Alan Moore in the British sitcom Rising Damp.

Richard Beckinsale was born on 6 July 1947 in Carlton Nottingham. Before Porridge, Richard Beckinsale had starred in a highly successful sitcom over on ITV called "The Lovers".

During the same period that Beckinsale was playing Godber in the hit series, he also starred as Alan in the hit Rising Damp. Rising Damp is arguably the funniest comedy ever shown on the ITV (the BBC have always been more successful in comedy). This is why, despite his short career, that Beckinsale is still so much a part of our daily lives. He brilliantly contributed to two of the best comedies of the 1970s.

Sadly, Richard Beckinsale died of a heart attack on 19 March 1979. He was just 31 years old. It is tragic that such a wonderful talent should have met such an early death. However, we should be grateful that he gave us so much laughter, laughter that continues even today.

Beckinsale played the part of Leonard Arthur Godber in Porridge. His character was very important to the series. Fletcher takes him under his wing and explains prison life to Lennie. Therefore, prison life is explained to us, the audience.

The role grew beyond this however due to the combination of the brilliant writing of Clement and La Frenais and the undeniable genius of Beckinsale. Ronnie Barker always enjoyed working with Beckinsale and all of these factors gave us one of the finest comedies in British TV history.

How will heaven be?
As far as I can see
It will have huge bells
And will be situated on clouds
It will have many golden wells
That will so often swell
Rain will be abundant
And the sun will shine all day long
Angels will play on the harp
The sweetest summer song
Music that will touch the heart
While those beneath will shed drops of sorrow
Little will they know what will happen on the morrow
But to them up above
As plain and clear it will be
As far as far as I can see
Yes there will be misty alleys
And lush green meadows
Fresh with the fragrant smell of spring
Winter will never be bitter
Summer never so hot
Autumn never so bare
And resources never so scarce
Food for all will be relished by all.
Grateful we’ll be as grateful can be
Mountains high and strong and brown
Surrounding that hidden land,
Beautiful and vast seas I see
There colour as blue as sapphire can be
And the white waves lashing upon the shore
Sitting on the flattened grey rocks
Who would not call it absolutely heavenly?
However it might actually be,
But can we still not see
There will lie behind this seen
A relieving feeling of bliss
For where not have we been
But is this not by all believed
That after one’s decease
This is the land of eternal peace
Where we all ultimately reach?

For a truly great Man

Richard if it possible that you could ever read this, it is just to let you know that even after all these years and remembering your performances, I and many others miss you so much. I get sad when I see your TV work and wish that by some work of God that you could be back. But the legacy you left us will be forever there for us to watch. And your beautiful daughters have the same talent as you had.
I really hope there is that special place we go when we leave this earth so I can say hello.
God bless you Richard.

Forever Young

Thank you so much for the wonderful performances you left for contempories and future generations to enjoy, and for your two talented and lovely daughters.
So sorry you were not given more time to enjoy all the blessings you richly deserved. Such a huge talent, such breathtaking promise, cut so cruelly short.
The sky was the limit - and now you are up there, a star sparkling brighter than any other. God bless you Richard. You were, are, and always will be very much loved and admired, by those you loved and those who knew you only through the TV screen. X
